If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

As a first-generation student, coming to UCSB and beginning my college journey felt overwhelming at first. However, I soon realized that there are multiple on-campus resources that truly dedicate themselves to helping all students, no matter the circumstance. It was easy for me to build a support network because I found all the help to be very accessible as long as I looked for it. I have never felt a lack of guidance being at UCSB, and I thank the many mentors, advisors, and professors I've met who have contributed to that experience. Finding my community within the large campus through different clubs and organizations has also made me feel more at home. Overall, my experience has given me a sense of belonging at UCSB despite being a first-generation student.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

I absolutely love UCSB! Despite being a first-generation student, I have never felt a lack of guidance on campus and there has always been someone willing to help with any concerns or difficulties I may be facing. Joining different clubs and organizations has helped me find my community and has given me new experiences that contribute to my personal growth. Developing a support system of mentors, advisors, and friends has fostered a sense of belonging that truly makes UCSB feel like home.

Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc)

- Make use of study spaces like the USS Monarch Lounge, Mosher Alumni House, or campus org study jams! Especially during finals week when the library is packed and it becomes the Hunger Games to find a spot. - Get involved in campus orgs that interest you! This is the best way to make those lifelong friendships while in college, and it gives you something to look forward to that is outside of academics. - Fav resources: USS, AS Food Bank, CLAS, and the library scanners (saved me lots of $ on textbooks)

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

One quote: "A ship in a harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are for." Carrying this quote throughout my time at UCSB has encouraged me to confidently step out of my comfort zone, try new things, and challenge myself without fearing failure or adversity.

Why did you choose to be an EOP peer mentor?

I understand how overwhelming entering college can feel; that is what led me to seek guidance and learn valuable things from mentors and advisors during my first two years. As an EOP peer mentor, I hope I can impact my mentees the way my own mentors impacted me by sharing all I have learned regarding resources and advice. I aim to provide a safe and entrusted space for my mentees as a fellow peer who they can hopefully relate to and feel comfortable sharing with.
