If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

Overall my experience as a first-gen at UCSB has been incredible. In the beginning I definitely struggled as I felt out of place, lost, and alone most of the time. However, as time went on and I forced myself to be more involved with various clubs and make use of school resources such as CLAS, the food bank, caps, and even going to TA's and other classmates for help, I slowly adjusted more to the lifestyle and grew to love UCSB over the years.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

As a second year student this year I still have 3 more years at UCSB and I couldn’t be more excited for every year to come. UCSB has really been a place that allowed me to grow so much by challenging me in ways that I couldn’t possibly imagine before and giving me the support to succeed and become a better version of myself in every way. The memories I have made so far have truly been some of the most cherished moments of my life and I can’t wait to make more as the years go by.

Top tips for fellow students?

One of my biggest study tips is to really explore all of the different buildings and hidden spots on campus as it will come in handy during midterms and finals week when the library and the more popular spots on campus will be super crowded and busy. Another tip I have that really helped me succeed in my first year is to make sure you are taking care of yourself and actually take breaks when you need it. 6 hour study sessions can be exhausting and if you are like me who can’t focus for more than 30 minutes giving yourself some time to walk around the beach in between classes or lay on the grass in front of the library when needed can really help clear your mind and allow you to take on the rest of the day in a more productive and fulfilling manner.

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

What you give is what you get. This piece of advice has really changed my mindset and been the key to helping me succeed in college. If your goal at UCSB is to make more friends, you have to put in the effort to reach out and involve yourself in various clubs or organizations where you can meet people and find your crew. If you want to do well in a class, you have to take the extra steps and talk to TA’s or professors if you need help or find study groups or school resources that can help you out.

Why did you choose to be an EOP office assistant?

I chose to be an EOP office assistant because EOP was one of the most helpful resources for me during my first year of college. Through this program I got to connect to so many influential people who helped me find the proper help I needed or guided me in working through any problems I was facing. For this reason I really wanted to involve myself in a program that changed my first year experience for the better and has inspired me to want to assist others who are also seeking help in navigating through their college experience.
