If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

As a first-generation student, moving away from home to go to college was a very difficult process. However, being surrounded by people who have faced similar challenges has allowed me to take pride in this part of my identity.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

While going into higher education is a very daunting task, finding places where I feel a sense of belonging has helped mitigate feelings of self-doubt. Cultural resource centers like El Centro where I feel have been a huge aspect of my journey at UCSB because the people there have made me feel so welcomed.

Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc)

There are so many amazing resources on campus! Some of my favorites so far include Basic Needs, CLAS, and CAPS. One tip I would give students is to make time for your own hobbies/interests as a way to prioritize self care. At the end of the day you’re not only a student but also a person and its so important to take time for yourself to prevent burnout.

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

Be the change you want to see! Especially as first generation students, it's even more crucial that you take steps to build your own network of support. Whether that be asking questions to your professors and TAs during office hours or exploring resources that help you reach your goals, don’t be afraid to reach out to others when you need a helping hand.

Why did you choose to be a member of the EOP Team?

I chose to become a member of the EOP team because its a way for me to give back to my community. Its really fulfilling to show to students that they have someone who will hear them out and who they can rely on to have their back.
